IHOP Announces Mysterious Name Change, Leaves Customers Clueless

By Colin Fredericson

IHOP will no longer be known as the International House of Pancakes, according to a mysterious Twitter post.

IHOP said it will change its name to IHOb, but did not clarify what the “b” stands for. IHOP’s Twitter page indicates they will reveal the meaning of the new letter on June 11. The tweets mentioning the name change went viral.

The video tweet announcing the change had over 2 million views, 10,000 likes, 8,500 comments, and 4,800 retweets as of the time of this publication. An IHOP spokesperson told the New York Post that the name change isn’t a joke.

“For 60 pancakin’ years, we’ve been IHOP. Now, we’re flippin’ our name to IHOb. Find out what it could b on 6.11.18. #IHOb,” wrote IHOP on Twitter, next to a video of the “p” in IHOP flipping upside down into a “b.”

IHOP’s Twitter page posts are full of jokes of varying levels of humor referring to its trademark breakfast staples like pancakes and French toast.

IHOP gave a hint at what the upcoming name change could be in a tweet with a poll of four choices: biscuits, bacon, butternut squash, and barnacles.

Twitter user @LegoBeast6 guessed that the mystery b stood for burritos in a comment below the announcement. User @OnlySarah guessed it stood for “buffet.” Twitter user @YeyoZa guessed that there was musical significance to it. “Maybe it’s IHO♭, the music symbol for flat?”

Many users think “breakfast” would be most inclusive and logical, but IHOP commented in reply to most guesses that they would just have to wait and see, while not totally confirming nor denying any speculation.

One commenter said the decision might hurt IHOP.

“I don’t think ur thinking this through the whole point is IHOP Sounds cool when u say it no ones gonna be down for ihob,” said @chrisburger97.

The current name of the IHOP parent company, Dine Brands Global, is also the result of a name change that the former Dine Equity made in February, according to the Post.
