Crater at Hawaii Volcano’s Summit Collapsing

Dramatic changes to the Halema’uma’u crater at Kīlauea’s summit in Hawaii was caught by a drone on June 13.

The United States Geological Survey has been monitoring the collapse of several craters at the Hawaii volcano since it erupted in early May.

“Clearly visible are the steep crater walls that continue to slump inward and downward in response to the ongoing subsidence at the summit,” said the USGS in a post.

“The deepest part of Halema‘uma‘u is now about 1,000 ft (300 m) below the crater rim.”
